1 Stroke Jack-o-Lantern and other Fall Demos ! :)

Hi Everyone!  How are you??   I hope  life is cranking out some goodness!

We are so happy that a lot of you are keeping us busy here at Jest Paint. We really appreciate your support and your mega sweet words of encouragement as we jump into the craziness of the Halloween Season!

I made these quick step by steps for you if you are craving some new face painting ideas.  If you have any cool fall designs that you want to share on the blog e-mail me some pics and I will put them on this page.

Cameleon Colorblock Roses is my new favorite cake!

Zombie Skin is a ton of fun to use. Just keep in mind that you are going to use it to create gruesome effects, so don’t expect a flawless finish with this good old goop unless you are a master at sculpting sticky paste. Santi used layers of bunched up toilet paper to add to Oceana’s humiliation (no, actually to make the nose bigger without having to use as much Zombie Product).  The bonus to this toilet paper addition was that Oceana was left with a very smooshy flexible nose that we could mold around. She found this really fun to play with and so did we!  If we didn’t use the toilet paper her nose would have dried into a very firm rubber material.

Zombie Skin does not have ammonia in it after some magical processing, but it does still have a rather pungent rotting flesh smell that is gross, but very easy to get used to…and the smell fades as it dries.

To make cuts, you just plop a glob of the paste onto the zone of destruction and quickly smooth out the edges all the way around with a popcicle stick, a rubber mixing spatula, or the end of a paint brush, or anything flat and smooth. I imagine a zombie tooth might work well for smoothing out the skin, but we didn’t have any of those.  Once the skin starts to firm up you jab the thick center with a q-tip, a butter knife, a popsicle stick or something that won’t actually hurt you, and then pull the Zombie skin apart a little.  Now you can color the skin and bruise it and fill the hole with blood and life is good! Well, life is more disgusting actually, but luckily it is just temporary. Below is Linda’s review.  🙂

Reviewer: Linda Schrenk from Jacksonville, FL United States

This product is super easy to use. I’ve made ripped out mouths, cuts & holes in head. I am not a SFX expert, but this product makes me look like one. It’s easy to paint over & comes off easily.

Have a  great Halloween Season. Let us know if there are any new products that you would like to see at our store, or if you have any step by step requests.   Thanks again!

Anna and Santi  🙂

Quick Step by Step Eye Design plus Zombie Demo Revisits

This is a great design for those new to using rainbow cakes because there really aren’t any fancy moves here.  The key is just to make your strokes flow around the face. Keep your wrist loose and paint with your whole arm as you swirl up over the eye and around the cheek bone.  Try to keep you strokes away from the mouth, and you will be all good!

ZOMBIE TIME IS HERE!

Looking for good colors to use for painting zombies? The Paradise Nuance Palette has a lot of colors that would make perfect bruised, rotten, moldy zombie flesh! Click here to check it out.

We also have some wonderful Zombie Skin for easy 3-d effects.  It is recommended to keep the goop covered as much as possible and lay some plastic wrap over it as you work deeper down in the jar. A little goes  a long way with this stuff. Add and blend small areas at a time to get good blending while it is still soft. My daughter loved getting covered in it, but I didn’t take a picture, so keep your eyes out for one soon! She wants more rotting flesh all over here ASAP so she can freak out the neighbor boys!  Here are all of our special effects products!

Oooh ohhh oooh and you will notice that we have Mehron Extra Flesh and Mehron Synwax.  A customer has used both and she says that the Synwax is better for doing really large effects, giant gashes and facial molding, and the Extra Flesh is really easy to use for smaller wounds, warts and all that nasty stuff.

If you have any Halloween Requests for Demo’s or Products let me know!

Anna 🙂

P.S.

Below is an old YouTube video I made demoing a zombie face in case you want a nice zombie flashback.

Halloween is Coming!

I get so excited every Halloween, and you all probably do too.  I also get a little frazzled that I can’t do everything I want or am asked to do when Halloween weekend comes around. Have  you ever felt this way?

Soo Many Halloween Options (Mine and maybe yours):

  • Private make overs for kids or adults
  • Private Halloween Parties
  • Birthday Parties
  • Large Company Parties
  • City Sponsored Events
  • Charity Events and Fundraisers
  • Mall Events
  • Dance Clubs
  • Contests for yourself or someone else
  • Events at Bowling Alleys or Lazer Tag and Paintball Places
  • Haunted Houses
  • Casinos
  • Church Events
  • School Events
  • Enjoying Halloween with your own friends and family

I find that I have to chew over every gig request, wondering if I should just commit to make-overs throughout the day, or wait to take on big events, or just make it a special day for me and my family.

If you are in it to make as much $$ as you can to support yourself during the slow season, you will have to make a clear decision and stick to it. The tricky thing is booking small makeovers or short parties and then getting the call for that dream gig that will cover your rent and food bills for the next month, and not being able to do it because of the smaller gigs.

Some ways you can overcome this are:

  • Have a two or 3 hour minimum for a  party at your Halloween rate.
  • Contact any company that you think might book you, or whom you would like to work for and let them know that you are available if they are having any Halloween or Harvest Time events.  Don’t wait for them to contact you first, they might have lost your contact info, or they might do it last minute, when you are already tied up with smaller events or private bookings. Then fill in the cracks with makeovers if you have the time and/or energy.
  • Charge more than usual for those individual makeovers  or require that people wanting makeovers come in groups so that it would equal your Halloween hourly rate. For example, if you charge $100 per hour on Halloween, you can ask for $20 make overs for 20 minutes per person for 5 people minimum.  Or charge $50 for makeovers after 5pm, with a two person minimum or so on and so forth and all that math jazz!
  • If you are going to do makeovers, early is better than late.  Have people come as early as possible so that you can fit at ton of bookings in throughout the day.  A lot of people might not need their faces painted until 8pm, but you can’t paint everyone’s face at 8pm, so some will have to come earlier and just enjoy the whole day in face paint. For an additional charge you could provide a mini touch up kit or they could come back for a quick touch up if they drink their face off etc.
  • Set up a public pay per face booth somewhere where you will get a lot of takers.  In this case as well, make sure that you will charge enough per face to equal a good hourly rate.

Don’t pass up a sweet gig for a gig that is going to cancel last minute:

  • Get contracts and deposits for everything you do on Halloween. Make sure that everyone you will be working with is totally committed to the plan, it will save you a lot of grief on such a long awaited day!
  • The week of, call everyone that you have made agreements with and carefully go over the date and time and other important details. I just goofed up a booking because the mom thought that the date she told me was on a Sunday, when it was really a Saturday, so make sure you not only get the date, but the day of the week confirmed.  Also, make sure you have e-mail and cell phones (not just work phones) of those you are working with, and that they have yours in case of last minute changes.

If $$ is not an issue, then you can start planning your dream Halloween weekend early so that when it arrives you can have as much fun as possible.  Book those gigs that might not pay a lot but you really want to be a part of.  Make decorations, build costume pieces, research costume contests, buy a lot of candy, plan a crazy party or whatever your dream is!

Clash’s Face Paint Ideas

Below are some Pics of  Designs I made using some of my favorite rainbow cakes…credit is due to the Wolfe Brothers for the little green arm creeper, I was inspired by their arm monsters…which are pretty fast and sickening!

The Fall Fairy

Happy hot summer! I hope things are cooling down a little for you in the steamy spots! We keep expanding our store, and you can see what we have new under the NEW Products Category. FAB Ziva Blue Shimmer will be here very soon, and we will also be getting the water pens…you can see the review here. I love these for my black line-work!

The TAG Fall Fairy Cake was inspired by a photo Santi spied of Barbara Breitung from Tappy’s Face Painting

We not only liked the colors but how she used the BAM Tree stencil.

Here are some examples of designs I made using the Fall Fairy cake…

If you haven’t played with mixing the earthy pearls and metallics for bases, give it a go! The outcomes are very pretty! We also carry a little rainbow pot called Otoño that I used to make this cat below.

Barb has submitted some great Pics recently that she painted using our Pearl Brisa cake. Here is one to give you an idea of how it looks on happy people!

The Jest Plain Funny Contest

Kaci McCall from Mystical Rainbow Creations  won the Jest Plain Funny Contest. We had to sleep on the decision because there were a lot of really good entries that made us laugh out loud.  Kaci won $50 of face paint supplies from Jest Paint! You can see all the entries here

New Products Demos

This is just a short post to let you know about 2 new products that we have in stock.

The first one is called Skinliner by Kryolan. They are face and body painting markers. Unlike others that we have seen around these are great quality! They are water based so they are not completely water proof. Watch the video and learn all about them!

The second product we added to our store is called Spin Cake! These are a variation of rainbow cakes that are becoming very popular in the Face Painting community. They are specially made to be used with dotter sponges or pouncers.  We have a couple of options available right now and we will add more options soon. Watch the video to learn more about them.

Here are some examples of fun designs made with Spin Cakes

Have fun painting and feel free to ask any questions you have about these and any other products at our store!!

Experimenting with StarBlend

Summer is here and we wanted to show you some options to make your face painting last longer.

Anna and I experimented with StarBlend and we found out that if you put a base of Paradise Coral or Paradise White (or any other Paradise color you want – or Kryolan color) before adding the StarBlend colors to the face, the powders will stay longer and colors will look much more vibrant than if you only use StarBlend by themselves.

Take a look at this funny video and leave us your comments!
