The Winning Peace!

The results are in for the Peace Out Contest. We had a ton of voting going on! This was by far our most active contest ever with nearly 200 votes and 16 entries! A lot of people had a hard time choosing their top choice when they entered the voting booth! Congrats to our top winner and to everyone for taking the time to practice with their creativity!

The winner of the contest is Cat Cabajar, and here is what she submitted with her entry.

My name is Cat Cabajar and I own The Painted Cat Professional Face & Body Art Studio in Sarnia, Ontario Canada. I have been face painting since the summer of 2004 when I was on the committee for a local arts festival called Artwalk. Since then I have done birthday parties, festivals, fashion shoots, fundraisers and all sorts of amazing events. This year I have started my journey into full body art. My goal is to travel with my trade and enter more competitions. When I saw that you were holding this contest I thought it would be a great way to delve in!
My submission is the result of an image I envisioned when I first read about this contest. The most important part of peace is finding it from within. It is only then that you can express the kindness, compassion and clarity that it takes to share that peace with others. Keeping calm amongst the chaos, that is what this piece represents to me.
I used Wolfe Bros. and Mehron products for this design.
Thank you for this opportunity 🙂

Peace Out Contest Voting Booth

Here are the top 5 entries that you can vote on! Read the voting rules below before  selecting your choice.

Thanks so much to everyone that took the time to enter! From inner peace to world peace, to getting funky with peace, it makes me soo happy to see how creative everyone was with adding such an important message to their face and body art.

– You cannot tell others what picture you submitted until after the contest is over.  After looking at  the poll results on how to run contests here, we are trying to base votes solely on the quality and creativity of the design.
– Only our blog subscribers can participate and vote, so sign up if you are in the voting mood!
-Voting will take place from February 15th until February 20th at 11:59pm eastern standard time.
-You can vote only once, and you can only choose one entry.

-The winner will be announced on the blog and Facebook and contacted through e-mail on February 21st. We will tell you how to redeem your $50 store credit. Yeah!!

I want to thank every one for taking the time to submit such beautiful works of art, and give a huge shout out to those who were entering a face painting contest for the first time.

It was very difficult having to choose the top 5 submission for us to vote on, I was so close to choosing the top 12 instead! But rules are rules, and I had to stick to them.

Click on the image below to zoom in and bask in the glory of all of the other submissions that we received. Feel free to praise the designs in the comment box below! After the contest I will post the names of each artist next to their work.

The Newest Face Painting Contest is Here! Peace Out!

Oh my it has been a long time since our last contest!

If  you made it through the worst of the Post Holiday Job Slump scream “Yeah, gigs are coming again!” If you didn’t hit a slump, please tell us why in the comments!

Oh yeah, the contest!

The prize this time around is even bigger than in the past! a $50 e-gift card or a $50 store credit to JestPaint.com, wooohooo!

The subject of the contest is “Peace Out!”

We are hoping for a lot more peace in our Families, our Schools, our Towns, our Country and our World.  We often wonder how we could ever achieve world peace if we can’t even achieve peace in our own little circles. Everyone is so different in so many ways that it is natural that it is hard for us to all get along easily.   We think that face painting peace signs and other symbols of peace on kids and adults is a nice reminder to those who see them that peace is on our minds! We just need to be examples of peace every day and challenge others to forgive and to compromise.

If you have a peaceful idea for this contest, don’t wait until the last minute! Whip out some practice faces and sketch out as many creative ideas that you can. Once you find the one you like the most paint it on your arm or leg or neck… or someone else that is human, and send it to us!

Quick Submission Rules

1. Paint a human with the Peace Out theme in mind. Be creative as a crazy caterpillar and make a new design just for this contest.

2.  Most of the design should be done with professional face paint. Only use stencils and bling to add to the design, not to create the whole design. E.g. a stenciled background to add texture is okay, but do not use a stencil for the whole design(like you folks would ever do that anyway.)

3. Take  nice clear pictures that aren’t blurry,  too dark, or set to a contrast so high that the model’s tear ducts are bright red and their skin is unnaturally orange. ..I love to tweak my contrast a little, but don’t go overboard with editing, doing this can be misleading. Photoshopping the actual design is a no go, but photo shopping out the background, explosive zits and boogers is fine!

4. Let us know how you felt about participating in this themed contest, and/or some bio info about you.

Other things to consider before you get going!

The pictures will be posted anonymously once they are all submitted. The latest poll results on the best way to handle voting show that most of you want me to pick the top 5….and then subscibers vote on those top five to pick the winner. Check out our polls if you want to weigh in on this for future contests.

Only those subscribed to the blog can vote, and we discourage popularity voting. You can tell folks on facebook to join the blog and vote for the design they like the best…but do not tell them what your design is…please.  And the design can’t be painted on your own face, but you can paint on your own arm or leg or someone else’s face to help keep it anonymous. So basically, this also means that the design has to be new and not published anywhere else.

Extra Rules/Logistics for Entry

(Don’t groan too loud…We know… We Know…rules are not the artists number one fun thing on earth… but these are actually important to read, so buckle down folks!)

Art History Contest Results! Yeah Edwina!

Hi Folks!

THE VOTES WERE CAST AND Entry #1 won!

The artist behind this Vangoh Starry Night rendition is Edwina Shelley from Party Picassos Facepainting!  Here is a note Edwina submitted with her entry!

“LOVED this contest. I knew immediately what I was going to do; Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Over a year ago at a nightclub, a man asked me to do it on his face. I didn’t have a lot of time, but it was fun.  So my entry is one I painted today of Van Gogh’s famous painting.

Van Gogh used lots of texture and line in his work – not lots of smooth graduated tones. Most of the time in face painting, we use the blend cakes and don’t use much texture. Our work tends to be cute, silly or scary, but this time I got to work on a more “classic” level.

Thanks for the opportunity. It was great fun and I had a very willing and patient model (thanks, Makayla!)”

The second place winner was Jen Schuster from Sunny Face Painting. She painted a Chagall inspired painting of the Garden of Eden. She also did a fantastic job! Thanks so much to both of you for taking the time to go out on the limb and paint with a whole new style!

And thanks to the 24 people who voted!

Original Post Below:

Everyone must be pretty busy painting at gigs, because we only got a two entries for the Art History contest.  Those that entered  seemed very excited to try new techniques for face and body painting, thanks to some inspiring artists.

The voting will Last until Next Monday (June 27th, 2011)  at 11pm EST.  The votes will be hidden until Tuesday, June 28th, and then we will post them on this page and a new blog article.  We will contact the winner on Tuesday, June 28th, and he/she will get a $25 credit at the JestPaint shop!

As posted in the rules for the contest, only those subscribed to the blog can vote, and we do not encourage popularity voting…aka asking your friends and family to vote for you.  The pictures will be posted anonymously once they are all submitted. You can tell folks on facebook to join the blog and vote…but not tell them what your design is. Thank you so much! We made these rules after listening to your suggestions on what a dream contest would be like.

New Face/Body Painting Contest! Art History!

Hi Folks!

It is Anna and Santi here. Guess What!?  A new contest is starting! Yeah!!! The temps are heating up! ( Speaking of heat….let us know if you would like us to carry Star Blends from Mehron…and what colors you like the most. )

After reading the poll results we are going to have you all choose the winner! We found out that we can post a million options on the polls, so now the pressure is off of me! Only those subscribed to the blog can vote, and we do not encourage popularity voting…aka begging your friends and family to vote for you.  The pictures will be posted anonymously once they are all submitted. You can tell folks on facebook to join the blog and vote…but not tell them what your design is.  And it can’t be painted on your own face, but you can paint on your own arm or leg!  lol

The theme of the contest is “Inspired by Masters!”

Not master face painters, mind you, but those from Art History. You know, Van Gogh, Picasso, Degas, and so on. I think this will help us expand out creativity with brush strokes and color combos.  You can make a traditional face painting design, but just incorporate the styles of an artist into it, or you can do something totally off the wall!

Basic Rules

1. Be inspired by an artist in world history….dead or alive. Tell us who the inspiring artist is with your entry.

2. Your entry has to be painted on a real human using real face paint.

3. Tell me how you felt about participating in this themed contest.

Linda Schrenk is the winner for The One Stroke Flower Contest!!  She wins The One Stroke Stacker Set, Face Painting with Clash and a lot more goodies!

Here is what Linda shared about herself!

A little about me:

I started face painting in 2005 to help a friend who was short a face painter. Next thing I knew I was face painting, clowning, balloon twisting & doing magic(some of those I was not doing so well at:-) I took a break in 2006-2007 to care for my father with terminal cancer. In 2008 I revamped my business to just face & body art with some balloon twisting & gave it a name: Amazing Face Painting by Linda. I work along with my daughters(one is a wonderful henna artist, face paints, runs the glitter tattoos & can balloon twist. The other is a phenomenal balloon twister. It has taken off & I’ve fallen in love with it! I feel so blessed that I get to hang out with kids & be artistic.  -Linda

I kept going back to this picture over and over, and Santi too! The things we like the most about Linda’s design is that she used the flower concept in a very creative way by painting the petals and leaves in an unexpected flow around the eye, and her use of highlights and shadows are so bold.

All of the entries were great! From a body painting using one stroke roses, to an awesome belly painting using the cakes for tropical flowers, waves and sunset strips, to simple and bold designs that we all could use at any event. A simple chest bouquet (sounds funny), added to a cute eye design made it super glam for the ladies. We even have a step by step here with cool flowers and funky one stroke creations surrounding the flower arrangement. Thanks to everyone for sending in your entries!

Click on the Image below and zoom in to see all the designs in detail.  🙂

CONTEST VOTING- What do you prefer? What is fair?

Hi Face Painter Buddies!

I have received some questions about the voting for the contest, if the subscribers vote or who chooses the winner, and based on what criteria.
My blog doesn’t have the capabilities to do the open voting like some forums do, I can only make small polls, which means I, or some other artist could choose the top 5, and then everyone could vote on those top 5.
Read the info below, and Please post a comment about what you think is best in your opinion. I know open voting brings lots of traffic to a site, but I want this to be the best contest for you all, not my blogs stats.
Things to consider about open voting.
#1 We’ve had few too entries since my blog only has 100 subscribers, and some are not face painters.
#2 I think it isn’t fair when the pictures keep getting posted before the deadline, because the first people who submit entries have a disadvantage of being one-upped by the next group of people who see their entries and try to do better than theirs.
#3 It becomes a popularity contest to see who has the most friends that can take the time to come and vote for their picture. I know West Coast Face Painters tried to make an anonymous contest for the FABAIC convention prize, but it was totally obvious in many cases who wrote the essays and who did the art because the group members know each others styles. Also, they weren’t allowed to recruit votes, but people can do that through e-mails and no one knows.
I am going to sit down today and try to think of the ideal situation that is fair to everyone. It is hard for me to be the decision maker because I know most of the people who submit entries to the blog. I have to really focus on the creativity when looking at the designs, and ignore who submits them, and my Santi helps me too. Maybe I could get guest Judges…like the Wolfe Bros, or Jinny to come by and choose the winner. Hmmmmm
Any more ideas are super appreciated!!
For now, the contest is based on creativity and technique, which I think are the two most important factors when judging art. I like to see people trying something new with their skills!
All my love,
Anna 🙂
